A total of 196 people participated in the Forum on Social Cohesion organized by the Regroupement des CDEC and Juan-Luis Klein, director of UQAM's Centre de recherche sur les innovations sociales (CRISES). Each representative of the 13 CDECs in Québec presented a project that fosters social cohesion in their community. The objective of the presentations was to demonstrate that social cohesion is an asset in avoiding economic and social erosion. Professor Klein went on to explain during the plenary session that a risk-free environment with tools for local mobilization provides a favourable place for economic development. On the other hand, economic inequality renders social cohesion fragile and can become a cause of disaffection. He therefore invited the participants to make cohesion an essential orientation in their strategic planning or in their annual action plans, by focusing on the improvement of the quality of life of citizens as a common objective.
During the plenary session, the participants agreed to develop and share a common vision with respect to social cohesion and the development of transversal partnerships in Montréal, Québec City, Trois-Rivières and Sherbrooke, by acting proactively to increase partnerships among CDEC workers.
