On November 10, representatives of Québec's Regroupement des CDEC had the opportunity to meet with Denis Lebel, Minister of State for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, in the scope of a consultation tour with local development organizations.
Discussions were cordial right from the outset, with everyone agreeing on the importance of open dialogue. For almost two hours, one by one, the CDEC chairs presented their projects and achievements, with harmonious development in their respective communities being the common denominator. We also stressed the importance of our model of community economic development, which is based on cohesion instead of confrontation. This model is part of a holistic approach to revitalizing local communities, combining economic and social dimensions to further local development that benefits the community.
Not only did Mr. Lebel listen attentively to our spokespersons, but he also let us know that he wants to work with the CDECs over the coming years. The Agency's programs are now undergoing an administrative review, and while the process could be improved, the Minister's intentions should be accompanied by a string of decisions, including the development of a new cooperation agreement for the long-term by next April 1. In fact, only a long-term agreement will enable us to better plan our work and to consolidate the expertise developed within the CDECs.
This said, one must render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and instead of clashing swords behind closed doors, Minister Lebel has chosen dialogue based on productive exchanges. In our opinion, this attitude deserves mention, in an era where the search for excellence is too often eclipsed by the primacy of special interests and short-term results. Thanks to this invitation to dialogue, we are confident that we will be able to reinforce the partnership between our organizations and the Canadian government in the best interest of our communities.
