On November 5, the Regroupement des CDEC and professor Juan-Luis Klein of CRISES UQAM (Centre de recherche sur les innovations sociales) will host a forum on the role of the CDECs in building social cohesion. The forum follows on action research focused on CDECs and social cohesion, to understand whether our actions have a real effect on the factors influencing the building of social cohesion on a district scale.
A crucial ingredient for the development of a community, social cohesion is necessary for the harmonious functioning of a society. The recipe is very simple, it rests on the art of compromise. No deep analysis is required to understand that only dialogue among actors who have different objectives enables compromises to be proposed, the first step towards building a more cohesive society. That is a role that the CDECs have played for a quarter of a century, and it was time for a forum to demonstrate, through concrete examples, how each CDEC contributes to social cohesion in its community.
When the curtain goes up, each CDEC is to present a project, including basic information and objectives, partners, history, what was achieved and its contribution to social cohesion. We have decided to highlight the Côte-des-Neiges en fête, 5 continents, 5 sens event. The event began in 2003, and as you can see in this issue, in the article about the 2010 edition, this collective achievement is a perfect illustration of our contribution to the building of social cohesion of Montréal's most multicultural district. Encouraging social mixing while developing a feeling of belonging in the district is the added value of such a project. Thanks to the forum, the event's reputation will once more extend beyond our borough and that is a good thing.
